Tri-County Tennis Tournament History

Tri-County Tennis, Inc.’s flagship event is the Tri-County Tennis Tournament, usually held over several weekends in July. The Peoria Journal Star newspaper began the tournament in 1969 and successfully hosted it for 35 years on public tennis courts in Peoria, Illinois. In approximately 2005, the newspaper gave the tournament to the Peoria Tennis Association which ran the tournament until 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic caused such events to be halted.  

Although the tournament was not held in 2020 and 2021, interest in the tournament managed to survive the pandemic. In 2022, persons from the Peoria Tennis Association teamed with newly formed Tri-County Tennis, Inc. (TCT) to resurrect the tournament.  That year the tournament was moved from its prior locations in Peoria to the Joal Stanfield Tennis Complex at Morton High School in Morton, Illinois.  Locally, Better Banks stepped in to be the name-sponsor of the event which served to support the tournament in a significant, financial way.

2023 was the first year in which TCT fully presented the tournament: 184 tennis players registered for some 230 entries (with some players entering both singles and doubles events), producing numbers that the tournament had not seen in years.
